Launched in 2009, The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair is the UK’s biggest single celebration of science and engineering for young people, aiming to inspire them through engaging and interactive activities, workshops and shows.
Over 29,000 people attended The Big Bang 2011 whick took place at ICC London ExCeL from 10 – 12 March. The headline shows were Sky 1’s Brainiac Live!, BBC’s Bang Goes the Theory and The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust’s Alphabeat show. The Fair also featured BBC’s Wallace & Gromit ‘World of Invention’ roadshow.
In addition, The Fair hosts the finals of the prestigious National Science & Engineering Competition, which sees the two individual winners in the senior category are given the titles the "UK Young Scientist of the Year" and the "UK Young Engineer of the Year".
Awards are presented at The National Awards Ceremony, with 2011’s top prizes presented by Professor Brian Cox and Kate Bellingham. Competitors are allocated stand space on the main exhibition floor, rubbing shoulders with corporate and other stands and explaining their projects to the thousands of visitors. This gives those young people who visit the event the opportunity to see and talk to “people like them” actively involved in STEM activities.
