Why the NEC?
The client was looking for a large, open space that allowed enough room for a start and finish of the 5km route with some interesting sights. Due to the nature of the event, it was important that the route wasn’t looped to keep the element of surprise at each 1km mark when the runners are covered in different colours. Good transport links was an important element, especially as the runners take part in waves of 500-800 every 3-6 minutes from 11am throughout the event so many are arriving at different times.
Hall 5 for registration and entry onto the course, roads and paths around the NEC site and car parks for the finish line and Colour Festival.
For a mass participation event aimed at a wide-range of audiences from young families to adult teams, having over 10,000 participants on site and using a variety of different indoor and outdoor spaces, you would expect some challenges to arise. However, the experienced NEC team ensured the event ran smoothly and no difficulties were encountered. The Color Run commented, “the NEC is a venue that meets all of our events needs with fantastic transport links. Everything was well prepared and handled perfectly. “
The client was hugely impressed with the NEC team and their event management skills. The Color Run utilised the internal services which made the running of the event for the client a lot easier. The extensive knowledge of the venue team saved both time and money for the client and avoided delays in a short turn-around by having to fully brief external suppliers themselves.
Senior Operations Manager for the Color Run, Patrick Toland, said: “It is an absolute delight to work with NEC staff on the Birmingham Color Run. Their passion for the event and enthusiasm for their work makes delivering it such an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. It’s really nice to work alongside a venue who is so supportive and it’s a pleasure working alongside the NEC team.”
