Adding to an impressive list of awards recognising the NEC’s on-going commitment to responsibly managing the environmental impact of its operations, Team NEC won last night’s Birmingham Post Business Awards “Environmental Award” at the ICC in Birmingham (Wednesday 26 November).
“The events industry continues to make great strides in its positive contribution to a “greener” world, and as the UK’s number one venue, we believe we should lead by example and make a positive impact on the way people think and behave when it comes to sustainability,” said Kathryn James, the NEC’s Managing Director.
“Sustainability is now everyone’s responsibility, and we work hard to monitor the environmental impact of our operations both at events and in our offices. We’re extremely proud that our efforts have not only been successful in minimising negative impact - such as achieving zero waste to landfill - but have also been recognised by key regional media.”
The NEC’s environmental credentials include zero waste to landfill; BS EN ISO 140001 certification; a £496k investment in smart meters, ultimately increasing energy-efficiency; 815 urinals fitted with Hygienex Ureco technology, saving 103 million litres of water per year; and new on-site shuttle buses feature low-emission diesel technology and tracking software to measure efficiency.
In addition, Team NEC works in close partnership with Solihull Council to support various local communities and community projects with the donation of recycled materials and through volunteering.
Last night’s success further enhanced the NEC’s environmental credentials and added to the venue’s ‘Best Waste and Recycling Scheme’ Award won at Birmingham City Council’s Sustainability and Recycling Awards earlier this year and a “highly commended” recommendation at the National Recycling Awards in London.
